GRAND HÔTEL-DIEU | FÊTE DES LUMIÈRES 2018
LYON | 6 > 9 Dec. 2018
LIGHT WALK
The city of Lyon’s three-day Festival of Lights, which starts on 8 December every year, is an international festival that attracts more than one million visitors. Following the completion of a seven-year renovation project, the Grand Hôtel-Dieu will once again provide the backdrop to this festive event. To reveal its breath-taking architecture, SCAPRIM invited TETRO to create a light “walk” to explore during the festival.
- CREATIVE WORK PRESENTED -
TETRO created a pathway with three original works designed and staged for the Grand Hôtel-Dieu by light artist Yves Caizergues. From 6 to 9 December, visitors are invited on a thought-provoking and artistic journey through the Grand Hôtel-Dieu’s unique architecture. The three-stage light walk takes in the cour du Midi, the cour Saint-Henri and the cloister, lit especially for the occasion.
This breath-taking experience takes visitors on an artistic journey.
POLYCHROME
POLYCHROME is a magical pathway through the garden of the recently renovated cloister courtyard. Playing on the seasons, this captivating chromatic installation lulls visitors with the gentle sound of singing by invisible birds. The Grand Hôtel-Dieu invites visitors on a magical stroll through the cloister garden.
In this bucolic setting, bright colours gracefully transform the building’s architecture and plants.
An immersive journey to the heart of nature… in the centre of the city.
ASCENSION
The cour Saint-Henri, at the heart of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, is dominated by a remarkable dome - an architectural beacon in the Lyon landscape. ASCENSION draws out the ascensional dimension of this iconic architectural feature. At nightfall, light emerges, pierces, floods and gushes out, revealing the building’s unique character. Set to the rhythm of a classical score, it sheds light on this sublime building’s architecture and heralds its rebirth.
*** RÉFLEXIONS***
Three reflective monoliths have been placed at the centre of the cour du Midi to embody the history of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu. This original composition by sound artist MEROVEE mixes textures and sound pigments, such as sounds taken from the city archives and the laughter of seagulls. The interaction of mirrors and gold and silver lights intensifies the radiance of the monoliths. This sequence presents the courtyard and its new glass roof in a contemporary light and offers a futuristic vision of the GHD.
